What is a graphic designer?

Graphic designers are not only professionals but artists who, with the help of their creative skills, do the art of visuals. They are the experts who design attractive graphics and communicate their ideas and thoughts with the aid of images. Thus, it would not be wrong to call them visual communicators. Like every artist, graphic designers also require creativity as their principal skill. But the skills do not end here. There are many other qualities that should be inculcated in order to become a successful graphic designer. Some of the most important traits of visual artists include problem-solving, ideation, technical skills, and strategy. History of the graphic designing

Graphic designing has a long history, and it actually commenced in the early modern period when the movable printing press was invented by Gutenberg in 1440. But if we look at it from scratch, the use of visuals in communication began at a far earlier time. Preliminarily, graphic designing originated in the form of visual communication with the advent of cave paintings in the caveman times in 38000 BCE to the first visual comprehension from 3300 to 3000 BC. Then, China came ahead with its innovations in printing in 200 CE and continued till 1040 CE with the emergence of the world’s first mobile printing press. And eventually, Johannes Gutenberg contributed to the advent of similar technology. Being in a race, the Wiener Werkstätte (the first graphic design agency) was founded in 1903 by the painter Koloman Moser, the architect Josef Hoffman, and the patron Fritz Waerndorfer.

Milton Glaser

Milton Glaser was an American graphic designer who was born on June 26, 1929, in the Bronx, New York. He is popular globally for his “I Love NYC” poster. He pursued his education at the High School of Music and Art and the Cooper Union art school of New York in 1951. After being granted a Fullbright scholarship from the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna, Italy, he joined the academy and completed his education. In 1957, he worked as a cofounder with Seymour Chwast and others of Push Pin Studios in New York. He had designed many record covers, books as well as posters. In the 1960s, he created one of the most unique posters of Bob Dylan.  

Paul Rand

Paul Rand was born on August 15, 1914, in Brooklyn and was renowned for his commercial logo designs. He was also an American graphic designer but also worked as an American art director. He had been one of the first American commercial artists to execute the Swiss Style of graphic design. He began working as a part-time employee to create stock images. He is called a Modernist Master owing to his remarkable contribution to modern design. Some of the most eminent trademarks designed by him comprise the logos of Westinghouse (1960), ABC (1962 and IBM (1972). He worked for about 70 years and inspired various generations of designers.

Herbert Lubalin

Herbert F. Lubalin (born March 17, 1918, in New York) was an American graphic designer. He graduated in 1939, and after completing his studies, he faced many hurdles in his early career and also got fired once. After that, he worked at Sudler & Hennessey for approximately 19 years. One of his most fascinating works was his typographic journal U&Ic and the foundation of the International Typographic Corporation. He is most popular for his work in Ginzburg’s magazines, where he worked with Ralph Ginzburg. The magazines include Eros, Fact, and Avant Grade, and he had been given credit for the creative visual beauty of these magazines.
